Cats Of Gili
helping our feline islanders
Cats Of Gili is an animal welfare charity project to help the cats of the Gili Islands, Indonesia.
CATS OF GILI is an animal welfare project for cats in Gili islands, Indonesia. We are just one of the many green and environmental projects our mama foundation Gili Eco Trust (GET) is doing. GET also works with our island horses, coral reefs, turtles, rubbish issues, recycling and all things "green".
The cat project was officially launched in September 2013, and since then Cats Of Gili has been working hard to keep our island kitties happy and healthy.
Over the years we have organized several free vet clinics (usually 2-3 per year) where our volunteer vet teams have spayed and neutered thousands of cats. Since we started, we have also looked after countless cats and kittens in need of help. And when the going gets tough and our islands face serious challenges (such as 2018 Lombok earthquakes and then 2020-2022 when COVID stopped tourism totally), Cats of Gili has stepped in to help keep our island cats well fed and looked after.
For years we did our best without having a vet clinic on the island. Luckily, this has now changed and since 2022 there has been a permanent clinic and a vet on Gili Trawangan, offering veterinary services to the island cats. This allowed us to move our focus from organizing vet visits and dealing with seriously sick or injured cats into looking after more kittens, and occasional adult cats who just need a bit of help in their lives. We never turn away a cat in need. And we occasionally take in even chickens, ducks or goats!
It has taken us years to gain the trust of the local community and to get people to understand what we do and why we do it. It has been heartwarming to see how nowadays most people living on the Gili islands love our cats. We continue supporting and educating local cat loving families, providing help, advice and free cat food when needed, to gain long term trust, and to improve the well being and care of pet cats.
We currently have our MEOWQUARTERS building in Gili Trawangan, where we have most of our rescue cats and kittens, and we also have our little charity shop as well as a brand new cat café.
Cat rescue work is the core of what we have been doing for the past 10 years, and it still is what we are and what we do. Everything else (charity shop and café) is just to support our work with cats.
Our goal is, and has been since we started back in 2013, a healthier, happier cat population on Gili islands.
